U.S. "natural" baby food has pitfalls, some containing genetically modified ingredients

Is a food labeled "natural" necessarily natural? Not really. The U.S. nonprofit Consumer Reports reported on April 7 that an inspection program from April to July of this year found that a significant percentage of foods labeled "natural" in the United States contained a high percentage of genetically modified ingredients. The agency tested more than 80 foods containing soy or corn and found that foods labeled "non-GMO" or "organic" were largely free of genetically modified ingredients, while most foods labeled "natural" or not labeled at all contained a high percentage of genetically modified ingredients. Most foods labeled "natural" or not labeled at all contained significant levels of GMO ingredients, including potato chips, breakfast cereals, and infant formula supplements. "Consumer Reports believes that the word "natural" is misleading and that many consumers mistakenly believe that natural foods are non-GMO.
